Wood products play a significant role in the circular economy. The circular economy is an economic model that aims to minimize waste and maximise the use of resources. At Abodo we have created a product from defected, re-worked thermally modified material in the form of our Vulcan Shingles.
For centuries shingles have been used as a successful roofing and cladding material. The Renaissance in shingles reflects a broader trend towards more sustainable and traditional building practices.
Based on the principles of reduce, reuse, and recycle, Abodo’s Vulcan shingles use our proven thermally modified New Zealand plantation timber, engineered with our patented vertical grain, is the perfect base material for our Vulcan Shingle. The thermal modification process and vertical grain structure means Vulcan shingles have an enhanced stability, reduced resin content, and a beautiful homogeneous brown colour which will silver off with exposure to weather if left uncoated.
We take cladding and screening offcuts from the production process. These short length pieces are edge ripped to width and passed through a horizontal bandsaw using a proprietary process that results in a bevel profile shingle with bandsawn face. We then OPX treat the timber. OPX is a patented colourless water-based timber preservative treatment developed by Abodo. OPX contains the well-proven combination of azoles plus termiticide combined with mouldicides and water repellent for enhanced weathering characteristics in above ground exterior applications.
As consumers worldwide demand more environmentally conscious products, Abodo is committed to delivering them. By using defected and re-worked material that arises from our production process, we are preventing it from being discarded and ending up in a landfill. This helps reduce waste and minimise the environmental impact of our manufacturing process. In the future we see a return from jobsite program being implemented, to further enhance the sectors circular input to the process.
Abodo’s Vulcan Shingles with its superior beauty, Class 2 above ground durability, coupled with our Sustainability credentials forms an important step in our advancing journey in the circular economy.
