Punangairi Visitor Centre

Set within the sensitive landscape of Paparoa National Park, Punangairi Visitor Centre is a highly sustainable timber building designed to sit lightly within its extraordinary natural setting. The architecture weaves around existing nīkau palms and geological features, using timber structure, prefabrication and a living green roof to minimise environmental impact while strengthening visitors’ connection to place.

Developed in partnership with Ngāti Waewae and built largely by local tradespeople, the project is a powerful example of how timber architecture can support cultural storytelling, environmental stewardship and regional community outcomes alongside exceptional visitor experience.

Hangar 4 opening

Air New Zealand - Hangar 4

Air New Zealand’s Hangar 4 is a world-first in aviation infrastructure and the Southern Hemisphere’s largest single-span timber aircraft hangar. Spanning almost 100 metres, the project demonstrates how mass timber can deliver exceptional structural performance, seismic resilience and sustainability at an industrial scale.

The session will explore the technical, logistical and construction challenges behind delivering one of New Zealand’s most complex engineered timber projects — from prefabrication and transport through to large-scale assembly and collaborative problem solving.

Arvida Bethlehem Shores

One of New Zealand’s most ambitious mass timber residential developments, Arvida Bethlehem Shores is believed to be the country’s largest single-stage CLT project to date. Combining aged care, apartments and shared community spaces across five interconnected buildings, the project showcases innovative engineered timber solutions at scale — including CLT honeycomb structures, long-span communal areas and highly efficient prefabricated construction methods.

Delivered within an operational retirement village, the prefabricated timber structure significantly reduced construction noise, waste and disruption, while helping create warm, high-quality living environments for residents.

The Youth Hub, Christchurch

The Youth Hub Christchurch is Aotearoa’s first purpose-built facility to combine transitional housing with integrated youth support services under one roof. Designed around the needs of rangatahi, the project brings together housing, health, education, recreation and community services within a highly accessible, people-focused environment.

Delivered on a constrained inner-city site, the project demonstrates how timber, collaboration and co-design can support social, environmental and economic sustainability outcomes — creating architecture that is both deeply practical and profoundly human.
